GAUS Debating Society
A student society for critical thinking, public speaking and competitive debate.
Aim
To develop critical thinking, public speaking and argumentation skills among students through structured debates and discourse.
Objectives
Provide a platform for students to develop and showcase debating and oratory skills.
Organise inter-departmental and inter-university debate competitions.
Conduct workshops on public speaking, argumentation and critical thinking.
Foster open-minded discussion and respect for differing viewpoints.
Prepare students for national and international debating championships.
Code of conduct
Every member agrees to these ten commitments on joining the society.
- Members shall engage in discussions with logic, courtesy and intellectual honesty.
- Regular attendance at practice debates and training sessions is required.
- Opposing arguments and speakers must be heard out fully without interruption or ridicule.
- Members shall accept adjudication decisions and committee rulings gracefully.
- Personal attacks, insults or unsporting conduct during debates are strictly forbidden.
- Podiums, timers and debate materials must be used carefully and returned after sessions.
- Members representing the society at competitions must uphold its credibility and decorum.
- Timeliness for practice rounds and competitions is expected of all members.
- Members must adhere to university guidelines during inter-institutional events.
- Unsportsmanlike conduct or repeated rule violations may lead to disqualification from teams.
