Graduate Program

MS Mathematics

Introduction

The MS degree in Mathematics focuses on strengthening of the ability of a student in Mathematical reasoning and logical thinking. Students in this program prepare themselves either for their further development in the field of Mathematics or for jobs in academic, industrial and government organizations.

The program offers a flexible frame work including scheme of courses covering major areas like Pure, Applied and Computational Mathematics.

The date of commencement of MS program is the FALL-semester of every year.

The Program

  • The student must complete 24 credit hour course work with CGPA ≥ 2.5.
  • Having obtained CGPA ≥ 2.5 in course work, the MS student will complete a 6 credit hour thesis and will successfully defend it in order to qualify for the award of MS degree.
  • Thesis evaluation and viva voce will be conducted by one external examiner (from a university of Pakistan other than university of enrolment) and one internal examiner.

Objective

  • The Department of Mathematics aims at providing a comprehensive knowledge of Mathematics at undergraduate and MS level. At MS (Mathematics) level the students are imparted state of the art education. This program has earned a great repute over the years and students all over the country show great enthusiasm for admission in this University. Apart from going through the course work, the students are encouraged to carry out quality research work, leading to publications in renowned international journals. The syllabi have been designed to enrich the students understanding towards the subject of Mathematics with a view to helping them encounter practical problems successfully in their careers. Utmost emphasis is laid on conceptual learning and application of Mathematics to the real world problems with the aid of good examples and exercises. In this regard a balance is maintained between applications and the basic principles behind them. The curriculum of Mathematics focuses primarily on the development of fundamental tools and strives to provide a strong foundation, which allows the students to cope up with the basic mathematical and physical concepts of science and engineering. Being mindful of the importance of the subject of Mathematics, the University has inducted highly qualified permanent faculty members to meet all the challenges at undergraduate and MS levels. Apart from directing the students in the discipline of Mathematics, plentiful emphasis is laid on their character building.

Vision

Grand Asian University Sialkot (GAUS) is a modern, demand-driven, futuristic, quality conscious and affordable private university. The University wishes to build its future through internationally recognized research work, scholarship and learning within a distinctive scholarly environment. The vision will inspire GAUS to strive hard in competing globally for better Pakistan based on Knowledge economy characterized by high levels of skills, lifelong learning and innovation.

Mission

The department of Mathematics has been established in Grand Asian University Sialkot with the aims
to provide students with mathematical skills required for applications in various areas of human
endeavors, and to prepare them for higher studies leading to MS and Ph.D. Besides becoming
an expert in mathematics as a subject in its own right, the graduates are equipped to demonstrate
expertise in applied mathematics, such as industrial mathematics, financial mathematics, scientific
computing, mathematical modeling etc.

Eligibility Criteria

The admission for MS degree in Mathematics is based on minimum criteria as per HEC requirements:

  • Sixteen years of schooling or 4 year education (130 credit hours) after HSSC/F.A. /F.Sc/Grade 12 equivalent will be required for admission in the MS.
  • The GAT-General (www.nts.org.pk/gat/gat.asp) conducted by the National Testing Service with a minimum 50% cumulative score will be required at the time of admission to M.S. The GAT-General test is valid for a period of two years. OR university can also conduct individual departmental entry test and interview as per GAT-General policy.

Scope

MS Mathematics graduates can find lot of opportunities in Research and Development firms, Economic Research firms, Market Research firms and Manufacturing firms. They can look for the job profiles like Quantitative Risk Analyst, Statistician, Treasury Management Specialist and Demographer in these firms. Those who want to work in public sector can find ample opportunities in various government organizations like Defense Research and Development Organizations and Pakistan Space Research Organizations. Reputed Software companies offer several career opportunities for these graduates in operation research, software design and programming. Banks and Insurance companies also offer lucrative opportunities for the candidates who have completed their postgraduate degree in Mathematics. They can also work in various government colleges and universities after qualifying provincial public service commission’s and Federal Public Service commission exam.
